EQUITABLE LEADERSHIP

Back in 2019, when we embarked on our equity journey, we recognized that we had to make significant shifts in ourselves, our processes, and our work to become a people-first organization that could better serve our community.

We invested deeply in our own unlearning around leadership and workplace belonging, and those efforts resulted in changes to our policies and programs. As a learning organization, we are sharing these insights with our community through this guide, knowing they will bring value to other nonprofits.

This document highlights essential themes and resources that nonprofit professionals can leverage to broaden their understanding of workplace belonging and integrate equity-centered approaches into their leadership practices.

Countless members of our community made this guide possible, including those that participated in group conversations and interviews, where themes were drawn from, members of our staff, and contractors, who supported with data collection, literature review, facilitation, debrief, and focus groups.

We especially thank former staff members Irina Meza and Reyda Taylor for leading this project, Katie Popp for her edits and feedback, and MC Board Member, Karl Nichols, for his contributions.

As with everything equity related, this guide is an evolving resource that will iterate with our own learnings. But we hope that you find value in it to support you in integrating equity into your nonprofit organization, and that you share your own experiences with us in a future engagement.
